Vandalism in North Merchiston Cemetery in Edinburgh.

Thursday, November 18, 2010

This was found in the Newington Cemetery in Edinburgh. Many of these sites are in terrible shape and Newington is near the top of that list. Here is a photo of one of the angels toppled over at the gravesite. It's very sad to see this lack of respect and neglect.

This is James Anderson and he lies at rest in the Newington Cemetery in Edinburgh. This cast bronze portrait was erected by friends and family. I love the patina that age has given his face.

Another interesting gravestone from Warriston Cemetery. This is also a detail of a much larger stone. The entire facing of this marker was all carved letters. The radioactive green color is real and I might add, toned down a bit. It's not in direct sun so the moisture and lack of light has grown it a skin of moss.

This is a photo of the Burnet family gravestone. It is a detail of a much larger stone located in Warriston Cemetery. It is one of those favorites that I visit every summer when I visit Edinburgh. It's just a few rows away from the previously posted photo of the angel grave marker for Annie Spence.

Some fun reading about Greyfriar's Cemetery in Edinburgh.

Greyfriar's Cemetery - Edinburgh

This is a detail from a much larger wall monument in the Greyfriar's Cemetery in Edinburgh Scotland. This small angel detail is still in rather decent condition compared with the rest of the gravestone. The angel is tucked in under a overhanging shelf which has partially protected it from seasonal weather conditions.

This is a detail from the War Memorial in the Warriston Cemetery in Edinburgh. Even though this graveyard is poorly kept and in a sad state of disrepair, I always see handmade wreaths or flowers placed at the base of this monument. Some people never forget and keep the memories alive.
Detail from a photo that I took in Warriston Cemetery this summer. This is one of the first gravestones I found in Edinburgh about 8 years ago when I began this photo journey of documenting these sites. It is the grave of Annie Paton Spence who died when she was only 3. I visit this stone every summer when I visit Edinburgh and seem to find yet another angle or new light to catch her in. Some things are just eternal. Rest in peace Annie!

These are photographs from my archive of historic cemeteries of Scotland. These images are from cemeteries in the Edinburgh region. Represented here are: Warriston, Dean, Piershill, North Merchiston, Morningside, Cuthbert, and South Leith Cemetery. The one skyline sunset shot is of the Necropolis in Glasgow.

Photographic Society of America

This past year I joined the Photo Society of America. For my page on their website I needed to choose a selection of images from a number of cemeteries I have photographed. Most of the images here are from the Edinburgh area and all are from historic cemeteries. The sad fact is that many of these graveyards are in an terrible state of disrepair, as the photographs document. This year the World Monuments Fund named several Edinburgh cemeteries as being on their top 10 endangered list. Here's to hoping that makes a difference and the city picks up the slack and begins to set up a program to begin to properly maintain this culturally and historically important sites.

Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia was one of the first national cemeteries to obtain historic status with the national commission on historic sites. It's location on the banks of the Schuykill River affords it stunning views of the river and the nearby city and landscape. The site is excellent condition and has an extensive education and visitors program. I have been photographing this site for several years now. Here are some examples of last summer's visit.

These are photos of the Mill Street Old Burial Ground in Ullapool Scotland. This summer I had the opportunity to travel through the northwest region of Scotland and visit many of the more intimate cemeteries in the smaller towns.

Historic Cemeteries of Northwestern Scotland

This past summer I had the opportunity to travel through the northwestern portion of Scotland. My travels through the islands of Lewis, Harris, and Skye afforded me the chance to visit small towns and seek out their smaller and more intimate cemeteries. I will begin posting photos of that journey and the beautiful landscape I encountered along the way.
